The Aquaculture Vaccines Market is expected to register a CAGR of 6% during the forecast period. Aquaculture is the practice of farming aquatic animals mainly for human consumption and keeping a healthy livestock becomes utmost important. Aquaculture vaccines market growth is expected to propel due to increasing rate of diseases in aquatic animals and the growing aquaculture industry.

According to Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, around 580 aquatic species are being farmed globally and it is one of the fastest growing food sectors. It also states that fish being a part of staple food of many countries, approximately 50% of the world’s fish is consumed as a food. Aquaculture industry is showing a shift from the conventional anti-biotic treatments to preventive measures such as vaccines. Conventionally, antibiotics were majorly used but excessive treatment of it increased the risk of dissemination and bacterial resistance among the people consuming these aquatic animals. According to the study “Current Status of the Use of Antibiotics and the Antimicrobial Resistance in the Chilean Salmon Farms”, Chile is the second largest producer of salmon, a type of edible fish. In 2016, the use of antibiotics for treating salmon fishes for culturing was found to be around 382.5 tons. This demands for a need of vaccination and other preventive measures to lower the risk of dissemination. Hence, this factor is expected to boost the aquaculture vaccines market growth.

Key Market Trends

Inactivated Vaccine Segment is Expected to Hold a Major Market Share in the Aquaculture Vaccines Market

Inactivated vaccines also known as killed vaccines uses the method of killing a pathogen which are cultured and then developed into vaccines. These are the majorly used vaccines against many bacterial and viral diseases.

Though it requires frequent doses there are minimal chances of a pathogen reverting back or interfering with the system. Inactivated vaccines are one of the majorly licensed and commercially available vaccines. Some of the vaccines are available against diseases such as infectious salmon anemia, infectious pancreatic virus, etc.

DNA vaccines are able to induce humoral as well as cellular immunity in the aquatic animals. The continued expression of the antigen in the host cell enables it to induce a longer immune response. The high burden of diseases such as IHN (infectious hematopoietic necrosis) is expected to have a positive impact on DNA vaccines market. For instance, Apex-IHN, a DNA vaccine is known to be very effective against this disease.

Also, DNA vaccines are efficient in developing as rapid production is possible, thereby expected to boost DNA vaccine segments market growth.

Asia Pacific is Expected to Hold a Significant Share in the Market and Expected to do Same in the Forecast Period

Asia Pacific is expected to hold a major market share in the global aquaculture vaccines market due the growing aquaculture industry and development in vaccination. According to the report “Fisheries of the United States, 2017” around 89% of fish, crustacean and mollusks are cultured in Asia. All the five major countries associated with aquaculture production are in Asia. The leading country China produces over 49,244,101 metric tons of fish, crustacean and mollusks. However, growing burden of diseases such as acute hepatopancreatic necrosis diseases, hepatopancreatic microsporidiosis and others demand for the need of healthcare management of aquatic animals.

Competitive Landscape

The Aquaculture Vaccines Market is consolidated and consists of few major players. In terms of market share, few of the major players are currently dominating the market due to immense involvement related to aquaculture vaccines. For instance, in 2017, PharmaQ, a vaccine manufacturing company acquired Nordland Sett Vaks, a Norway-based company to expand its product line of aquaculture vaccines. Some of the companies which are currently dominating the market are Merck & Co., Inc. (Intervet International B.V.), Pfizer Inc (PharmaQ), Microsynbiotix, Nisseiken Co., Ltd., Ictyogroup, Hipra, Technovax, Veterquimica SA and Aquatactics Animal Health.
