The electrical and electronic test equipment market is anticipated to witness a CAGR of 8.5% over the forecast period from 2021 – 2026. Electronic devices contain circuit boards that are incorporated with electronic components. Because they are used in essential devices with critical functionality, for example, motor drive circuitry for industrial robots, and electronic control units for electric vehicles (EVs), such circuit boards must deliver a high level of quality and reliability which is driving the need for robust electrical and electronic test equipment. The rising need for accuracy and speed in designing, manufacturing, or repairing electronic products is one major factor driving the demand for the electronic test and measurement equipment market. The proliferation of new electronic devices and emerging disruptive technologies, such as electric vehicles, autonomous driving, and 5G, is also fueling the demand in the market studied.

– In June 2020, Ranatec, a part of the Qamcom Group and supplier of specialized measurement and test equipment for RF and microwave applications, announced it had experienced a solid 1st half in 5G test equipment requests from the Asian market, requiring an increase in production capacity to handle the demand. The company saw a 250% YoY (Year on Year) growth in 2020 orders from Asia, compared to 2019. The supplier of niche test equipment expects the substantial influx of orders worldwide, which, as an indication, the electrical and electronics test equipment market is trending towards massive investments in 5G technology and development.
– In February 2020, Advantest Corporation featured its newest test solutions for advanced ICs at SEMICON Korea at COEX in Seoul, South Korea. – Many of the leading manufacturers of test solutions for smart devices are increasingly investing in the digital electronic test equipment segment. Many government regulations are also mandating the testing of electronic devices used in the industry. For instance, in January 2019, the Canadian Department of Innovation, Sciences, and Economic Development granted Interference-Causing Equipment Standard (ICES-003), which mandates technical requirements related to radio noise generated by Information Technology Equipment (ITE). These factors also motivate the market vendors to expand their product offerings to cater to existing and new applications emerging in the market.
– The market is also witnessing acquisitions by the companies to increase their presence. For instance, in March 2019, Teradyne, Inc., and the shareholders of Lemsys SA announced the acquisition of privately held Lemsys of Geneva, Switzerland. Lemsys engages in the manufacturing of test equipment for the high power semiconductor industry. It serves the growing and emerging power discrete device and module market for electric vehicles, high power industrial applications, solar, and wind power generation.
– The recent Coronavirus pandemic is expected to have a significant effect on the semiconductor testing, which is one of the significant applications of electrical and electronic test equipment. A quarterly report from SEMI laid out two market scenarios for semiconductor manufacturing in the second half of 2020. First, the sales of semiconductors could witness further dip amid the uncertainty surrounding the impact of COVID-19 to the semiconductor industry. Second, the semiconductor industry could catch on the strength of rebounding chip sales. This is expected to negatively impact the growth of the semiconductor manufacturing industry, decreasing the demand for semiconductor testing.

Key Market Trends

Electric Vehicles Segment is Expected to Witness Significant Growth

– As the automotive industry advances battery technologies and power conversion, companies have been actively working to improve electric vehicle (EV) testing performance. In the current market scenario, there is a race among semiconductor manufacturing companies to create ICs for safety-related and autonomous driving features. ICs for safety-critical car systems come with stringent new requirements defined by ISO 26262, which includes guidelines for semiconductors in the upcoming version. There are also new processing demands as the computational load increases for situation-analysis functions, demanding the need for electronic test equipment such as semiconductor test equipment, thereby driving the growth of the market.
– Automotive ICs are increasingly using leading-edge process nodes and the most advanced AI algorithms. For example, Nvidia offers its Drive PX-2 self-driving platform, which was manufactured with 16nm FinFET and boasts 8 Teraflops of computing performance. The Mobileye EyeQ5, scheduled for 2020 release, could be developed on the 7nm process. Owing to this, various semiconductor companies are designing very complex devices at the most advanced nodes that need to adhere to the ISO 26262 standard, and it is something of a perfect storm from a semiconductor test perspective. This is further boosting the growth of the market.
– Various governmental initiatives are also expected to drive the market. For instance, in May 2020, to accomplish UK’s net-zero goal by multiple investments to reduce vehicle emissions across all modes of transport, the UK government announced that it would be investing GBP 500 million to support the rollout of new rapid charging hubs so that the drivers are never higher than 30 miles away from a charging station. This investment will include a rapid charging fund to help businesses with the cost of connecting fast charge points to the electricity grid. Such initiatives are anticipated to augment the market for electrical and electronic test equipment.
– In May 2020, ISP, an independent test institute for the engine, drive train, vehicle tests, and laboratory analysis, announced the expansion of its engine and vehicle test benches to meet the needs in the field of electromobility. With an investment of EUR 60 million in a new test facility for battery modules and packs, ISP is opening a future-oriented business area and expanding its portfolio by offering comprehensive test services for battery protection. The new battery test center will provide performance and life cycle tests, environmental tests, and safety and abuse tests for hybrid and electric vehicles. The first phase includes 12 packs and 20 module test benches and 78 battery simulators.
