The analog integrated circuit (IC) market is expected to register a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period (2021 – 2026). Rising proliferation of smartphones, feature phones, and tablets is driving the market. Analog ICs are used in a wide range of applications, including third and fourth-generation (3G/4G) radio base stations and portable device batteries. RFICs (radio frequency ICs) are analog circuits that usually run in the frequency range of 3 kHz to 2.4 GHz (3,000 hertz to 2.4 billion hertz) circuits that would work at about 1 THz (1 trillion hertz). They are widely used in cellphones and wireless devices. As they are under development, the analog IC market in this segment is expected to grow.
– The market leader Texas Instruments retained its grip on the analog IC sector, accounting for 19 percent of global sales. That 1-percentage point increased over the previous year is more than the combined market share for competitors Analog Devices (10 percent) and Infineon (7 percent). However, Infineon remains the top European supplier of analog chips on the strength of its automotive, power management, and industrial sales. Automotive accounted for 44 percent of Infineon’s 2019 sales, followed by power management (30 percent). For all categories, Infineon’s 2019 analog sales slipped a single percentage point to USD 3.75 billion.
– Advanced fabrication techniques that reduce the cost per unit of these components while increasing the functionality are expected to further drive the industry’s growth over the forecast period. All the IoT application areas rely on wireless sensors. The increasing movement to connect more sensors to the internet and enable more connectivity across things has given rise to low-power wireless standards known as low-power wide-area networks (LPWANs). One of the companies, such as Radio Bridge, manufactures long-range wireless sensors for companies designing IoT applications based on LPWAN. For this, the company utilizes analog ICs from Maxim Integrated to develop outdoor/industrial versions of its sensors. Developed economies, including the United States and Japan, are utilizing advanced analog integrated circuits in military and industrial applications, thus bolstering the demand for such components.
– Further, the current semiconductor market’s downturn is primarily owing to the recent virus outbreak’s impact on the entire industry. The lockdowns that have been enforced by the spread of COVID-19 across the globe have not only affected the manufacturing of devices but have also dragged the consumer’s demand. Although the full impact of the COVID-19 is still unknown, the effect across the electronics value chain, starting from the materials to final products, will be affected significantly. However, to monitor the remote detection of Covid-19, the devices made for it are helping to gain market growth.

Key Market Trends

The Automotive Sector to Hold a Significant Share

– With the growth of autonomous vehicles, the demand for new chip design is growing. Analog circuits are needed on every chip to interface between the real world and the digital world. Application-specific analog IC sales for the autonomous vehicle are projected to grow in the future, as backup cameras, blind-spot detectors, and other systems are added to the vehicles.
– LIDAR is a key pillar of the analog devices holistic Drive360 autonomous driving solutions strategy. LIDAR utilizes pulses of light to translate the physical world into 3D digital images in real time with a high level of confidence, which facilitates the mainstream adoption of automotive LIDAR systems, which increases the growth of analog IC market.
– Texas Instruments introduced a series of single-chip millimeter-wave (80 GHz) sensor products, with a built-in standard CMOS, that offers to fulfill a range of distance-measurement-based sensing functions in autonomous cars. As the process is CMOS, it has also been able to integrate the complete analog front end with good signal processing and accurate detection over a spread of distances.
– Analog-integrated circuit signal processing with the automotive application is a device known as a “phase-locked loop” (PLL). This circuit can be used with certain analog (continuous time) sensors to provide an analog signal that can be further processed by a digital electronic signal system after it is sampled. Autonomous vehicles relying on light-based image sensors often struggle to see through blinding conditions, such as fog. PLL chip that locks the sub-terahertz frequency of all 32 local oscillation signals to a stable, low-frequency reference help to steer the driverless cars efficiently.

Asia-Pacific to Hold the Largest Market Share

– Asia-Pacific accounted for the largest share of the market studied, owing to the presence of several established vendors of analog ICs and the established electronics industry in the region. The region has emerged as a major automotive hub, with a maximum market share in terms of vehicle production and sales, as China continues to account for a large and growing portion of new car shipments, which drives the analog IC market.
– Increasing smartphone adoption rates have made Asia-Pacific one of the largest mobile markets in the world. This is due to the increasing population growth and urbanization. As per the GSM Association, more than 4 out of 5 connections will be smartphones by 2025. This trend is expected to increase the analog integrated circuit (Analog IC) usage for smartphones in this region.
– The increasing focus toward IoT platforms is boosting the growth prospects of analog ICs in this region. With countries, such as China, India, and South Korea actively trying to strengthen the IoT platforms, governments of these developing countries are focusing on entering various public and private collaborations, on leveraging IoT advancements for smart cities, automation, and other industrial applications, thus reinforcing the development of the Asia-Pacific segment. In September 2019, The GSMA APAC IoT Partnership Programme expanded to include more than 30 mobile operators, making it the largest IoT community in the Asia-Pacific region.
– Further, the rapid modernization of strategic weapons in South Asia has become the cause of increasing rivalry between India and Pakistan. With India’s quest to achieve nuclear triad that includes the development of the submarine-launched ballistic missile, land-based ballistic missiles, and fighter bomber aircraft, it aspires to attain the global power status. Analog Devices has been supporting the aerospace and defense markets that span the complete signal chain from sensors, amplifiers, RF and microwave devices, ADCs, DACs, and output devices

Competitive Landscape

The analog integrated circuit (IC) market is highly fragmented. Manufacturers compete on the basis of product innovation and technology differentiation. Many companies are increasingly investing in developing analog ICs to gain the first-mover advantage and a competitive edge. The key players in the market are Analog Devices Inc., Global Mixed-mode Technology Inc., Infineon Technologies AG, etc. The recent developments in the market include:

– June 2020 – Infineon announced that it will supply chipsets of IGBTs and diodes to the Danfoss Silicon Power business unit. The chips are mainly used in power modules for inverters that control the motors in electric vehicles. Infineon produces the IGBTs and diodes for Danfoss at its plants in Dresden, Germany, and Villach, Austria. Danfoss manufactures its power modules in Flensburg, Germany, and Utica, New York, USA.
– February 2020 – STMicroelectronics is helping the automotive industry with new tools ST’s AutoDevKit that assist the development of electronic control units (ECUs) to deliver safer, greener, and smarter vehicles to market more quickly and cost effectively. These act as the ‘mini-computers’ that manage the numerous electronic systems in today’s vehicles. The tool introduces a new and efficient toolset for creating working prototypes, replacing traditional artisan approaches and supporting standardization and design reuse.
