Immobilized enzymes are a common technique for enzyme engineering. In this technique, the enzyme is adsorbed onto an inert substance with low water solubility (eg calcium alginate). This technique can increase the resistance of enzymes to pH or temperature. This technique also allows the enzyme to be immobilized during the reaction, so it can be easily separated from the reactants or products and thus can be reused. This very efficient technique is widely used in industrial enzymatic reactions. One of the techniques for immobilizing enzymes is also known as whole cell immobilization
