Emergency lighting is an electronic light technology, specifically adopted to reduce potential injury in case of emergency situations during a fire, storm or natural disaster. Fluorescent light and LEDs are mainly adopted as lighting sources in the emergency lighting industry. Certain laws and regulations by both national and local regulatory agencies have resulted in the mandatory adoption of emergency lights in residential, commercial, and industrial applications.

Emergency light and exit sign are mainly adopted to ensure safe exit from a location through the provision of clear visual conditions to aid in finding exit/escape routes. LED exit signs have gained popularity, owing to their low energy consumption, long lifespan, and feasible price. Various regulatory agencies such as Nation Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) have set up certain standards for exit sign implementation.

According to NFPA in the United States, exit signs must provide at least 1.5 hours of light in case of an emergency when building lights fail. This has resulted in the mandatory adoption of exit signs in commercial, industrial, and residential infrastructure, thereby propelling the market growth. Based on type, the market can be segmented into emergency lights and electrical exit signs, non-electrical exit signs and general emergency lighting.

The emergency lighting market, estimated to reach a value of USD 5.8 billion in 2020, is expected to grow at a CAGR of 10.30% during the forecast period, 2019–2026.

Market Dynamics

Buildings primarily represent an important structure where fire accidents can have fatal consequences. Therefore, strict norms and fire safety regulations have been put in place specifically for buildings. Buildings should be designed such that there are appropriate provisions for early warning of fire and appropriate means of escape in case of fire, from the building to a place of safety outside the building. Various regulatory agencies govern emergency lighting and exit sign requirements such as Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Rules and regulations set by these agencies and local authorities must be complied with during the construction of buildings. For instance, OSHA’s requirement for lighting and marking exit routes are covered under 1910.37(b) and state that the exit routes must be adequately lighted so that a person with normal vision can see along the route. Exit signs must be illuminated to a surface value of at least 54 lux by a reliable light source. Elector-luminescent signs with a minimum surface value of 0.06 foot-lamberts are permitted.

Growing adoption of electrical equipment, coupled with modern lifestyles, has mainly resulted in an increased dependency on electricity. Power failure is a key issue faced in business, educational, and other sectors. Regular use of fluorescent lights has resulted in the increased emission of carbon dioxide and ultraviolet radiation, owing to the presence of hazardous raw materials such as mercury; consequently, eco-friendly and energy-efficient light sources have been gaining traction in recent years. The adoption of LED exit signs powered by rechargeable batteries increases efficiency and individual safety. Emergence of new and cost-efficient technologies in the LED lighting market have resulted in a decline in LED prices. Characteristics such as energy saving, longer life-span, and eco-friendly nature of LEDs have been driving the adoption of these products.

Segmental Insights

The global emergency lighting market can be segmented by type, application, and region.

On the basis of type, the emergency lighting market can be segmented into emergency lights & electrical exit signals, non-electrical exit signals, general emergency lighting. Electrical exit signs, also known as illuminating exit signs, are mainly embedded with LED light strips to provide red or green illumination. They either possess an integrated battery backup system or have a provision for connection to emergency backup power to keep the exit sign on, in case of power outage. Increasing number of fire outbreaks in both residential and commercial infrastructure have resulted in the implementation of strict safety regulations, which represents a lucrative opportunity for global participants in the exit sign market. According to the Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF), in 2017, 68.6% of the total fires took place in residential premises and 12.1% in commercial and industrial. In 2017, the most common fire hazard occurred owing to exit signs not being illuminated, which contributed to 25.9% of total Fire Hazard Abatement Notice (FHAN). Furthermore, dynamic modern lifestyle, coupled with increased usage of electrical equipment, has resulted in increased dependency on electricity. Developing countries mainly face power outages owing to the lack of maintenance in infrastructure and this scenario has been surging the demand for rechargeable emergency lighting.

Based on application, the emergency lighting market can be segmented into residential, industrial, and others. It is mandatory for residential infrastructure such as student accommodation or apartment buildings to have emergency lighting fixtures. This is the standard regulation which falls under the Regulatory Reform Fire Safety Order 2005 (U.K.). Emergency lighting in residential buildings is mainly adopted to provide light when the standard light fails. Increasing instances of power failure in several developing countries have increased the application of emergency lights. Increasing number of regulations by local and international safety agencies have resulted in the adoption of emergency lights in commercial buildings. Products such as safety signs, exit routes, and standby lights are adopted in commercial buildings such as hospitals, educational institutions, shopping malls, and office buildings. There is an increased preference for energy-efficient lighting solutions, owing to the increasing number of commercial buildings. According to the Philippine Statistics Authority, in 2015, commercial buildings dominated all other types of non-residential constructions, accounting for a 58.9% share of the total non-residential infrastructure construction in the Philippines.

Regional Insights

Geographically, the global emergency lighting market has been segmented into North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and Latin America, the Middle East and Africa (LAMEA).

North America is expected to witness significant growth in the emergency lighting market, owing to high consumer awareness about the benefits of using emergency lights. Favorable rules and regulations adopted by governments in outdoor lighting are also driving the growth of the emergency lighting market. For instance, in the United States, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) primarily regulates the fire safety of commercial and large residential buildings; both exit signs and emergency lighting are made mandatory by the law in private and public infrastructure across the nation.

Europe is one of the prominent regions in the global emergency lighting market, owing to the increasing demand in the residential sector. According to the Confederation of Fire Protection Association Europe (CFPAE), lighting to be adopted in emergency lighting should have a luminous intensity of not less than 1 lux on floor surfaces. The growth of the construction sector, especially in countries such as Spain, the U.K., and Germany, is anticipated to present lucrative growth opportunities in the future.

Market growth in Asia-Pacific can be attributed to population growth, which has been propelling the demand for construction projects. According to World Meters Statistics, in 2018, the population of Asia was about 4,545 million, about 60% of the total population. India and China are the most densely populated regions. According to the statistics by World Bank, the population of India in 2015 and 2016 was 1.309 billion and 1.324 billion. This growth in population, coupled with increasing purchasing power, is primarily driving the growth of the construction sector.

Countries such as UAE and Saudi Arabia are considered as a central hub for commercial, industrial, and residential developments coupled with high population density and economic activities. This scenario presents lucrative opportunities for the emergency light market.
