Bidirectional power supplies typically combine AC-DC converters, DC-DC converters, and regenerative electronic loads in a rack-mount unit enclosure. The most common bidirectional power supply voltages on the market are 80V-1500V, below 80V and 1500V-2000V, and the power ranges are 5KW-30KW, 30KW-75KW, 75-105KW, etc. A traditional electronic load converts the energy delivered to it into heat. At high power levels, large heat sinks are required for proper thermal management. Conversely, a regenerative electronic load in a bidirectional power supply can return most of the electronic energy sent to it back to a source, such as the grid or battery. It can perform so-called two-quadrant power tests, operating simultaneously as a power supply and as an electronic load or receiver. By returning electricity rather than converting it to heat, bidirectional DC power supplies achieve greater efficiency and can handle higher power levels in a smaller size and weight than traditional separate power supplies and electronic loads. Some commercial bidirectional DC power supplies can operate at 90% efficiency or higher, which means that only 10% of the test power is lost as heat or wasted energy. This also usually translates to a lower operating cost for a bidirectional power supply than for a separate DC power supply and load at a given power level. The bidirectional power supply can be programmed for different modes of operation, including constant voltage (CV), constant current (CC), constant power (CP), and constant resistance (CR). The parameter of interest remains constant by automatically adjusting other parameters. Bidirectional DC power supplies can evaluate how changes in supply voltage, current, or power affect DUT performance. For example, for any mobile electronic device operating on battery power, a rechargeable battery with a low state of charge (SOC) may suffer from voltage dips as its stored energy decreases. Bidirectional DC power supplies are often used in CV or CC mode to simulate a DUT’s rechargeable battery to better understand how a device or circuit will behave when its voltage fluctuates or drops below its nominal operating current or power level. The use of CV or CC mode also allows rechargeable batteries to be tested without the danger of overcharging or overheating the battery being tested. A regenerative load within the bidirectional DC power supply allows unused power from the DUT to be returned to its power source for high operating efficiency. These compact rack mount units are available for 200/208 VAC or 400/480 VAC input power and maximum ratings of 2000 VDC, 800 A and 20 kW. They can draw up to 100% of rated current for extended periods of time without degrading output power characteristics when transferring from source to load.
